cars are bad

I was just getting caught up on the cards over at Post Secret and came across one which says: “I love being the reason for other people’s road rage.”

I love that.

I covet that attitude, in all honesty. I am usually the one with the road rage. I want to be the one who mocks others’ rage.

So I forgot to mention that we had a rather exciting meal at our favorite Mexican restaurant on Monday morning. Allow me to relate the tale…

take action re arctic refuge

From NRDC

Please make your voice heard on Capitol Hill THIS week -- before your Senators and Representative feel even more pressure to sacrifice the Arctic Refuge and our coasts to oil drilling. –Frances

Read it and weep.

In the seven years since George Bush and Dick Cheney began a "Drill and Spill" rampage worthy of nineteenth century oil barons, the price of oil has skyrocketed 100 dollars and the price of gasoline has more than doubled.

But don't wait for them to admit failure. The White House is too busy exploiting our pain at the gas pump in order to hand Big Oil the ultimate prize: access to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and America's spectacular coastlines.

Their plan is simple and cynical. The President and his Congressional allies will sell America the big lie: If we'd only let the oil giants drill where they want, our problems at the pump will be over.

Tell your Senators and Representative you are not buying it. And tell them now, before they go home for the July 4th break and feel even more heat to sacrifice our natural heritage.

America cannot drill its way out of this energy mess. We simply don't have enough oil to move the world market.

President Bush's own Energy Department estimates that drilling in the Arctic Refuge would lower prices at the pump by less than four pennies per gallon -- and that would be 20 years from now!

Drilling off the spectacular coastlines of California, New England and Florida might produce a few weeks' worth of oil and lower prices by a few more pennies. Meanwhile, the price of gas has gone up 50 cents just this spring!

There's only one way to end our energy pain and that is by breaking our destructive dependence on oil. We need cars that get at least 40 miles per gallon. We need millions of plug-in hybrids that connect to a cleaner electric grid powered by renewables like wind and solar. We need more mass transit and better biofuels.

These are the real energy solutions that President Bush has sacrificed on the altar of oil addiction. Only the oil companies would want more of the same.

Tell your Senators and Representative to reject these shameless land grabs by Big Oil. Tell them to start kicking our national oil habit instead of emptying our wallets and destroying our last wild places.

And please, do it now . . . before the very worst bills come to a vote.

Sincerely,

Frances Beinecke
President

reba v2.0

At least once every ten days or so, someone tells me that I look just like Reba McEntire. It usually happens when I straighten my hair, but it even happens when I leave it curly, which is just inconceivable to me.

It's maddening.

Not because I think Reba is ugly or anything, she's not at all. But because I don't see the resemblance, beyond the fact that we both have red hair and long ago she stole my hair style (I had it first, dammit!) Ikss

I don't know why I felt the urge to share with with y'all today. But I did. So there you go.

beta carotene

I just ate an entire pound of baby carrots. By myself.

Just thought I'd share.

the ralph and karl show

Of course, right as I get back in to writing on this blog, I come across this article: “Is Personal Blogging Fast-Fading?”.

Andrea, you may be particularly interested in the following paragraph:

To be honest, I don't know anyone using Twitter or Jaiku other than my geek techie friends, but microblogs are quickly gaining momentum beyond early adopters…

:) Hee!

I came across some interesting (well, to me anyway) articles on these internets this morning. Let’s discuss…

my day, in convenient list format

One of the guys who works in the actual nursery here at Friendly Flower Place apparently had to trim back a Gardenia bush this morning, because he brought several of the blooms in to our office. I now have one in a little vase on my desk.

And it smells absolutely wonderful.

What a nice little treat for my day, I must say.

gordy on peter case's blog

Hmm…so Peter Case reprints an interview (or part of one) with a certain Mr. Gordon Lightfoot on his blog.

Well, that's just delightful! :) I happen to love Gordy, but as I am one of only a hand full of Americans who do, I always find it exciting when others show their appreciation of him. The fact that this appreciation comes from another songwriter whom I revere is just...well...delightful!

(or is it a show of appreciation? I mean, really, Peter Case just reprinting an article having to do with songwriting...

I choose to think Mr. Case loves Mr. Lightfoot)

Now Groovin To...

  • Flogging Molly -

    Flogging Molly: Float
Harkins back to my punk roots...and my Irish roots...kick ass, rockin', terribly fun songs to have a Guiness to. Or even a Coors Light, if you must. Don't let the fact that my 7 year old nephew loves them turn you off. He has fabulous taste in music (he has a London Calling poster on the wall of his bedroom). And please - stop calling them The Flogging Mollys! I may have to do you bodily harm the next time you do so.

  • Old 97's -

    Old 97's: Satellite Rides
I know, I'm way late on this...but I just discovered that I had this CD and popped it in to my car's player while moving over the weekend and it KNOCKED. MY. EVER-LOVING. SOCKS. OFF. Country and Rockabilly undertones throughout, with distinct Pop sensibilities and a definite Replacements influence in places (jesus, I sound like Rolling Stone). I am f'n in love with this band.

  • Jason Ringenberg -

Jason Ringenberg: Best Tracks and Side Tracks 1979-2007
Jason and the Scorchers were the only cool band to play at my High School grad night. My best friend and I were almost kicked out of Disneyland for dancing together at their show (that was back in the day when members of the same sex could not dance together at Disneyland)...anyway, I have been a huge fan for a very long time and this is a nice collection of some of Jason's finest. Some of the Scorchers' tunes have been re-worked, giving them a new, interesting (more country, less punk) slant.

  • Dave Alvin -

Dave Alvin: Live Out in California
I have seen the fine songwriter Dave Alvin live many times and it is always a joy. He always seems to be having just as much of a good time of those of us in the audience. Much of that live excitment is caught here (of special note is his truncated version of "Freebird", performed at audience-member request), but for the real thing go see him when he comes to town. My favorite of his songs ("Every Night About this Time") is not included, but this is still a fine collection of Dave's tunes.

  • John Doe -

John Doe: A Year In The Wilderness
*sigh* John Doe simply has the best singing voice this side of Merle Haggard and his songwriting gets better all the time. Plus, he has a killer backing band these days (check out the guitar solo by Greg Leisz at the end of the CD). I think this is my favorite of his solo albums. "The Meanest Man in the World" is a standout.

  • The Duke Spirit -

    The Duke Spirit: Neptune
Feel good, happy music I love to listen to in the car. I dig Liela Moss's vocals.

  • MGMT -

    MGMT: Oracular Spectacular
This music seems so out of my element. I mean, the duo uses a frggin drum machine, people...and yet I groove to it every time. There are songs on this CD which are a tad too techno for my taste, but the ones I love ("Time to Pretend", for example) I truly love.

  • The Raconteurs : Consolers Of The Lonely
Dudes, can Jack White get any better? Loved the first album, love this one even more. Jack's guitar-playing prowess is on fine display here.
  • Gnarls Barkley -

    Gnarls Barkley: The Odd Couple
I loved their first single, "Crazy", but found their first CD rather disappointing on the whole. Not so with this release, my friends. I can not get enough of his CD. "Going On" and "Run" are radio standouts, blending a distinct 60's pop influence with today's technology. Wonderful.

  • Spoon -

Spoon: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
All good things are raised in Austin. This band makes this old broad feel young again.

  • Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes

    L.E.S. Artistes
    Santogold: L.E.S. Artistes

Not sure most of her work is up my alley; but her quirky vocals on this track, along with the infectious beat make this tune tops in my book. I wake up with this tune in my mind. "I can say I hope it will be worth what I give up If I could stand up mean for the things that I believe." 'Nuff said.
