I watched Tropic Thunder this weekend. Despite the fact that Robert Downey Jr. was friggin’ hi-larious in it, I was not impressed. In it's one defense, I will say that I think those people who were offended by the use of the word “retard” need to grow up and realize that the character using said word was…well…pretty much a retard himself, so consider the source.
Sometimes I really hate people. And their over-sensitivity to anything perceived as not politically correct.
Oh, Tom Cruise, Nick Nolte and Mathew McConaughey were all also quite funny in the movie…but the material simply was not.
Conversely, Burn After Reading? Which I also watched this weekend? Absolutely fabulous! I laughed my ass off…well, almost…I mean, that’s a lot of ass to laugh off. It will take a few more Cohen comedies.
Why did this film get lukewarm if not lousy reviews? I found it wildly entertaining. George Clooney? Brill. Brad Pitt? Extremely amusing in his extremely dorky bicycle pants. Frances McDormand? Her usual, fabulous self. John Malkovich? Well, he grossed me out, as usual, but he was also very funny while he was doing so. And I should give a special nod to the Costume Designer on this film, as his character's swift mental decline is reflected nicely in the decline of his wardrobe over the course of the film. Oh and those high-wasted jeans George Clooney was forced to wear on his trip to the Home Depot were a fabulous reflection of his character's extreme ineptness (Ineptitude? Whatever. You get me).
I was quite shocked and surprised by a few of the scenes, too, which is always delightful in these days where I usually say things like “Oh, now you know that guy’s gonna die" (Untraceable, The Kingdom) or “Now she’s going to throw the spaghetti in to the air" (Two and a Half Men).
I seriously ruin almost everything The Old Man and I watch, because I am constantly predicting plot lines, out loud, and I am always right. Not because I am Kreskin, but because most plotline are infuriatingly predictable these days.
