OK, before I get in to the fanfic recommendation I want to make, I have to tell you all about this grossly disturbing dream I had last night. I know, but bear with me.
So I was in a recording studio, just hanging out and observing and not really saying much or doing anything (except I think I had a magazine in my lap, natch). It turns out that I was in there listening to a playback of a song recorded by none other than Spencer Pratt! With his wife Heidi Montag doing background vocals! AND as if that is not terrifying enough, it turns out the song was really good and that I was totally blown away by Spencer's vocals!
Weird...why have those people invaded my dreams like this? Is there no god?
OK, on to the fanfic recommendation.
I am supposed to write a rec for this fic in mid-March on a blog called The Little Known Fictster. But I am going to blow my load here and now because A) nobody reads this blog anyway, right? and B) I am really hoping that by March this will no longer bea little known fic and I'll have to scramble around looking for one suitable for me to recommend. Because this story is fabulous. I've been reading it almost since its birth and I really should have written about it here sooner, but apparently I am a cad who takes joy from people's work and never gives anything in return.
It is called Neverending Math Equation. It is written by twanza and can be found here.
Don't let the fact that it has the word "math" in the title scare you off. If I am not too stupid for it, I can guarantee you that you aren't, either. It really has little to do with math, except that Edward happens to be a math genius. He's also a music genius, though, and has decided to buck the wishes of his father and pursue that as his passion and his future. His bucking does not sit well at all with Daddy-o, Carlisle. twanza's version of Carlisle, by the way, may just be the most fascinating characterization of that man I have yet read. He has made only minuscule appearances, but his shadow hangs heavily over his sons.
Yes, I said sons. Plural. As in, Edward has a brother named Jasper. Jasper is his own kind of genius, art being his forte and tattooing the bodies of others his primary occupation (but not his only medium). He lives in a Brooklyn so finely and lovingly drawn that I now feel it is my second home, though I've never even visited the borough. Edward comes to stay with Jasper in preparation for an interview at Juliard and that is where he meets Bella.
Bella owns and lives in the bakery across the street from Jasper. She and Jasper are close and both have an unspoken passion for one another which bubbles just below the surface, but below it nonetheless. Enter Edward, a man of action. Unlike his brother, when he wants something, he reaches out for it. And, of course, he wants Bella.
This is a story of brothers. It is a story of fathers and sons. It is a story of love unattained but not unattainable. It is a story of passions, both buried and immediately surfaced. It is a story of math in the abstract, of the physics of the psyche and of daily living.
And it's fuckhot to boot.
It is stories like this which make me unashamed to say that I read fanfiction. It is far, far better written than most books you're receiving through your Doubleday Book of the Month Club subscription, I can guaran-damn-tee you. And you can read it online for friggin free.
Here is the official summary, as written on ff.net:
Based in Brooklyn. Edward and Jasper are brothers, each dealing with grief, ego, passion, and the clash between fame and the pursuit of true art. This is a love story of Bella and Jasper, a lust story of Bella and Edward, and a journey for all
.Go. Read. Adore. And then thank me, later, cuz there has to be something in this for me, right?
Dear Good Spock,
Further evidence that you are mine. My son is named after Elvis Costello. No, not the "Elvis" part. His middle name.
Love,
